What is a PIP Application?
What is a Personal Injury Protection Application(PIP APP)
After a motor vehicle accident, your own insurance company will send you a Personal Injury Protection Application, commonly referred to as a PIP APP. Your insurance company will do this automatically even if there were no injuries sustained in the accident. PIP is a portion under the Massachusetts Automobile Policy which is statutory and consider “the law”. Which allows you to get coverage for your medical bills associated with that accident regardless of your own fault in such accident. Laymens terms: it does not matter if you did something stupid and caused the accident; this coverage still exists. This coverage is up to $2,000.00 of medical expenses and will increase to $8,000.00 if at the time of the accident you did not have health insurance. If however, you did have health insurance; your health provider will kick in after the $2,000.00 is exhausted.
PIP Benefits will also cover the following:
Funeral expenses
Lost earnings, paid at seventy-five percent (75%) of average weekly wage, calculated based on your average wage in the one (1) year period immediately before the accident.
PIP Benefits can be lawfully terminated by your insurance company under the following circumstances:
- You were under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident
- The accident occurred while a felony or to avoid arrest by the policy
- The accident was done with the specific intent to injure yourself or another.
PIP benefits can be a lifesaver if you are ever injured in a motor vehicle accident. Always consult with an attorney if you are involved in a motor vehicle accident.
